They say that there are more temples than homes in Bali. In fact, if you see every home, you will find a shrine in their courtyard. There are thousands of puras or temples on the island, but a few of them are considered sacred and are revered by the Balinese. The largest temple is Pura Besakih in Kintamani, which is referred to as the Mother Temple with over 23 smaller shrines. However, the famous ones are Tanah Lot on the seashore and Uluwatu which gives you a brilliant view of the sunset and the coastline. Another of my personal favourite is Taman Ayun, which is the temple of the royalty. Goa Gajah is more of a cave temple, an excavated site that has Lord Ganesh and the Trinity inside the cave. One of the interesting features is a rock carved like a Buddha. Walk around and you will find wells and caves carved with demons and apsaras.
