Full-blown theatrics in a spectacular setting
Word to the wise: If you're on a budget or opera isn't really your thing, opt for cheaper standing room tickets for the opportunity to get a glimpse of the opulent theatre.
Opened in 1885 with a performance of Verdi's 'Aïda', the Théâtre Municipal was renamed the Opéra de Nice in 1902 and has been staging opulent operas and breathtaking ballets ever since. As awe-inspiring as the productions themselves, the interior of the Opéra is an exercise in sheer decadence with plush, red velvet furnishings and large crystal chandeliers suspended from a beautifully-painted ceiling by French artist Emmanuel Costa.
