It was a turbulent time when the Dutch ruled parts of Lanka. At loggerheads with the Portuguese, they knew that the sea is where they had to watch for invaders. After all, that was where they'd made an entry to this pearl in the Indian ocean. They decided to clear up a stretch just south of Fort Galle so that there was a clear view and a clear line of fire for their cannons. Today, this stretch along the waters is an ocean-side park. It stretches for a whooping 1600 ft along the coast and what's more, this gorgeous park lies in the heart of the busy financial district.
