This contemporary arts centre was one of the first independent arts spaces in Singapore, founded by the late literary and theatre pioneer Kuo Pao Kun—he was in fact, awarded the Cultural Medallion in the same year that he founded the Substation. As the name implies, this building was once a power substation until it was repurposed into its current status as an arts hub. It continues to push the boundaries of the local arts scene—frequently showcasing and developing experimental and edgy interdisciplinary works from a large range of genres—from visual arts, indie music, moving images, to theatre, the literary arts and even dance. The substation is located in the civic district, and is usually covered with street art from local artists, so take the time to walk around outside and to the back. After you are done watching your show, pop by Timbre (located in what used to be the back garden of the Substation) for some awesome live music and pub grub.
