Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary

Expect to see bisons (Goa's state animal) and other wildlife crossing your path. You would be safer if you do not honk and simply admire or click pictures without using the camera's flash. Netravali WLS has two all-season waterfalls, namely Savri and Mainapi. Out of these Savri waterfall is bigger, more popular and may be accessed via two different routes. Just as you enter the gates of the sanctuary, the road divides. The tar road along the hilly route is easier to navigate and will lead to the waterfalls and eventually a few villages after crossing the forestry mountain. It is the other route though, crossing a watering hole that might catch your fancy. This is an alternate route for Savri waterfall. Beware, this leads to a secluded jungle and grows creepy. It seems like you are being watched or worse, the foliage in front may have a few snakes camouflaged, you never know. The soil seems red laterite (laterite stones are used for construction in Goa) and the terrain is hilly. Drive carefully to prevent skidding. The last mile to this waterfall is downhill through a series of woody steps. Mainapi waterfall, on the other hand, is smaller but more secluded. Sometimes, you may see groups converge at these waterfalls for a picnic.
Netravali is the biggest wildlife sanctuary of Goa, covering over 200 sq km. Though situated in Sanguem Taluka, it is easily accessible from Canacona through a scenic drive of just over an hour from Palolem. Turn northeast from the Margaon-Karwar highway crossing forest check post of Bhatpal, village of Gaodongrem, forest check posts of Amba Ghati and Mangal. Proceed towards Netorlim and Shri Sateri Mahamaya Temple and finally cross forest check post of Verlem to enter the wildlife sanctuary. As of 2016, Netravali does not offer forest rest houses or cottages but if you wish, you could check for private options, including Angan Village Stay operated by Verlem EcoTourism Co-Operative Society Ltd.
