If you're yearning for a bit of downhill skiing, there are a number of slopes and resorts to choose from just north of Beijing. The best choice for a day trip is Nanshan, a man-made ski resort just 100 kilometers north of Beijing, offering both halfpipes as well as black diamond trails.
Nanshan is the most popular ski destination outside of Beijing. In addition to two larger chairlifts there are also nine t-lifts, which take skiers up the mountain to trails that range from beginner to expert. There's also a smaller snowboarding park here.

Nashan is not, however, comparable to Chamonix and the runs are relatively short, which can be frustrating during the weekends when you can be queuing for a long time to get on the lifts. But the grounds are well maintained and it's definitely worth a trip if you like to downhill ski. Overnight accommodation is available for approximately RMB 530.
