If you want to go off the beaten path, then Museum of Socialist Art is a must-see in the city of Sofia. It is a bit of a walk from the nearest metro station. However, it is completely worth it because it is reminiscent of the propaganda of Socialist Period (1944-1989). The Museum of Socialist Art is a relatively new museum and focuses on the art of communist period. Of course, there is the obligatory giant statue of Lenin in the outdoor Sculpture Park and propagandist art, but there is also a variety of more nuanced pieces that offer an insight into socialist ideals. The museum was opened only in 2011 to offer a peek into Bulgaria’s dark totalitarian years. More than a building, this museum is a political gesture that attests Bulgaria managed to shake off communism and march forward into the future.
