Museum of Art and History

Synopsis

An impressive, dauntingly large collection of art, artefacts and everything in between, the Museum of Art and History is a testament to the many wealthy art collectors who have lived in Geneva.

Museum of Art and HistoryAn artistic treasure house

Noteworthy for: In Konrad Witz's medieval painting 'Miracle of the Fishes', the museum probably has the first landscape ever painted from life, depicting a spot on Lake Geneva still recognisable today.

An impressive, dauntingly large collection of art, artefacts and everything in between, the Museum of Art and History is a testament to the many wealthy art collectors who have lived in Geneva.

Among its highlights are paintings by Rembrandt and Cezanne and sculptures by Rodin, while it also houses an excellent collection of applied art, including Byzantine icons, musical instruments and weaponry. If visiting Geneva has sparked an interest in local art, the museum is also a good place to discover more about Swiss painting - especially what could arguably be its star attraction, Konrad Witz's remarkable, ground-breaking St Peter Altarpiece, moved here from the city's cathedral.
