An unparalleled treasure trove of Pablo’s workNoteworthy for: The museum was set up by lifelong friend, Jaume Sabartés. He originally intended to open the museum in Picasso’s hometown of Malaga, but the artist insisted on Barcelona.
Word to the wise: The museum offers free entry on Sundays from 3pm.
Housed in five interlinked medieval palazzos in La Ribera, Museu Picasso focuses on the artist's formative years, particularly those spent in Barcelona. This means that the collection lacks some of his most famous hits, such as Guernica, but instead offers a fascinating insight into his journey towards greatness.
Amongst the 3,800 works kept here are the extraordinary Las Meninas series, paintings from his Blue Period and two of his first major pieces, 'The First Communion' (1896) and 'Science and Charity' (1897), as well as sketches, sculptures and ceramics.
