La Merced isn't just the name of the market or the old monastery the market was named for, it's the name of the whole area, which makes it easier to find. Not that you'll need it: this is one of Mexico's most famous attractions—a huge produce market that at times since it was established, very early on in the colonial period, it's fed the whole of Mexico City. The produce element of the market is still responsible for taking up much of the space, and much of the produce section brims with traditional Mex fare: spices such as epazote, chili peppers fresh and dried of just about every variety, nopal (cactus pads), whole fried pig skin, corn and Oaxaca cheese. This is an excellent place to try antojitos!
