The studios housed in this former Victorian fish-market building, feature some of the region’s most talented artists and designers. In a rapidly-globalising world, there’s something pleasing about seeing artists at work—creating the ceramics, jewelry, textiles and prints that are also available on sale. If you have the inclination and time, chat with the friendly craftsmen and women, and they’ll be happy to provide insights into their materials and processes, challenges and journey. As respite from the satisfying shopping, treat yourself to blueberry and yoghurt pancakes, quiches and tarts (or whatever’s seasonal and on offer) at Oak Street Café, the charming café at the Design Centre.
