Fine wine and stunning views in a UNESCO protected landscape
Noteworthy for: The Lavaux area's main grape is the white variety Chasselas, scorned as a mere eating grape in France but capable of producing fine wines up in the Alps.

Swiss wine might not have much of an international reputation, but it can actually be great - and often comes from some of the most absurdly picturesque vineyards the world can offer. The vine terraces at Lavaux are perhaps the most striking of these, remarkable enough to gain protection as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Stacked on the slopes of Lake Geneva's northern shore, they're not just an example of the skillful human reshaping of the landscape, they also offer the most perfect views across the lake to Mont Blanc. Hiking trails through the area help you explore, but if you haven't packed your walking shoes and aren't afraid of getting the giggles, you can take the utterly touristy little "Lavaux Express" train (really a string of miniature electric cars) through the area. Coming from Geneva by boat, this can be picked up at the villages of Lutry and Cully.
