Lake Atitlan is a vast caldera lake in the highlands of Guatemala. Surrounded by three towering volcanoes, it was described by writer Aldous Huxley as the most beautiful lake in the world. The Mayan villages on the shores of the lake are culturally fascinating. Unfortunately, Guatemala is a dangerous country to visit these days due to the high level of criminal violence, but when the situation improves, travellers will return large numbers as they did in the past.
