Some sun and sand in Varkala
Varkala is perhaps one of the more underrated beach destinations in Kerala, but believe us when we write that this is a magical place. Once you have set your eyes on a sunset over the sea from the cliffside here, you will know of the magic. A very trippy Tibetan market and some of the best coffee houses in Kerala are some other charmers here.
Church hopping in Kochi
When it is December you cannot not think of Christmas, more so when you are in Kochi. This very artsy city gets all decked up in fairy lights, stars, Christmas trees, lending a very festive mood to the churches and houses here. The festivities here continue till well past New Year’s Eve, especially with the Kochi Biennale also taking place this year.
A tea estate stay in Munnar
Munnar is one place in Kerala where staying away from tea equals committing a cardinal sin. If staying in a lush green tea estate in this much-loved hill station is on your mind, there is no time better than December. Expect mists rolling in from over the slopes, as you sip on some of the best brews that the country offers. Gruenberg in Munnar is one of our favourites, do check.
Pick spices in Thekkady
If you think that spice plantation tours are overrated, Thekkady would change all such notions. A spice plantation tour in one of the places here is a delight, for you will be walking across forested stretches, watching the practice for yourself. Most of the tours also have sessions that allow visitors to identify and pick their own spices.
Chase tigers in Periyar
December is when Kerala greets you with perfect weather. Perfect enough to go on boat rides and jungle safaris inside Periyar Tiger Reserve. Nestled in the foothills of Western Ghats, this reserve boasts of a very diverse wildlife and is home to many a species. When there, do not skip the night tours as well.
Aboard a houseboat in Kumarakom
Well, no trip to Kerala would be complete unless you have bunked up in a houseboat there. December is one of the best months to get on these in the backwaters of Kumarakom; while Alleppey is a more famous haunt for the tourists, Kumarakom is for the solitary wanderers and a great getaway for a day or two. While there, do not forget to gorge over local cuisine in the restaurants run by the local fisherman by the banks.
Detox days in Kovalam
Yes, there is more to Kovalam than this famous lighthouse by the sea! While this became the perfect postcard for Kerala Tourism, Kovalam is also home to some renowned Ayurveda schools. You can definitely check into Somatheeram Ayurveda Village here for some rejuvenating time. A wellness centre, it is the perfect place to indulge in Yoga, Ayurvedic treatments, complete with very comfortable stays and great, healthy food.
