Kiruna Snow Festival

While everyone else ponders their new year’s detox plans, the inhabitants of Kiruna dispel the post-Christmas gloom and make the most of their few daily sunlit hours with a magnificent celebration of snow. Skiing and ice skating competitions, and reindeer and dog sled races fill these five days at the end of January, and parties and feasts are held in giant igloos after dark, but the snow sculpting contest is the main event. A sparkling display of gravity-defying, artistically-rendered pieces gradually take shape over a five-day period and there are certainly no coal eyes and carrot noses involved; a glorious spectacle to accompany your reindeer kebab.
