Small and unassuming, Kappad Beach is famous for being the place where Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama landed with his entourage in 1498. Today, a stone plaque marks the historic event. Relatively undeveloped, the beach is clean and peaceful. Located 16 m away from Kozhikode, it is connected to Kozhikode’s backwaters through the Korappuzha River. Come here to watch the fishermen going out to the sea with their boats in the morning, and returning with their catch in the evening. A dramatic rocky outcrop extending out into the sea adds to the beauty of the beach. You can also hike up to an old hilltop temple situated nearby.
