Kanha National Park

Kanha Tiger Reserve is located in the Maikal Hills of the Satpura mountain range, and is spread across two revenue districts – Mandla and Balaghat. In 1879 Kanha was declared a reserve forest and later, in 1933, a wildlife sanctuary. In 1955, Its status was upgraded to a national park. The rich wildlife here can be credited to the superb interspersion of geographical attributes and welfare factors. Dominating all other species, Kanha is predominantly the land of the tiger. Owing to the numerous areas with a high concentration of tigers, catching group fights amongst the species is a common sight. In addition, there is also a rich variety of other animals including packs of wild dogs, spotted dear, sambar, the grey langur, over 300 species of birds and lastly, the Central Indian Barasingha, which is the most precious animal of Kanha. This Swamp deer is the last world population of the hard ground subspecies, and has been saved from extinction owing to the mammoth efforts made under Project Tiger. The must-see areas in Kanha include Shravan Tal, Shravan Chita, Macha Dongar, Bamni Dadar for its beautiful views of the sunset, the orientation museum and the grasslands of Mukki and Sonf.
