If you want to experience local sights and sounds, head to the glorious flower market at Coimbatore. Locally called the Poo (meaning flower) Market, this place is a riot of colours. There is an array of various flowers; Marigolds, Roses and Jasmine lend a heady, intoxicating fragrance that permeates the air here. In fact, when you see the garland makers work their magic with their deft hands you can see why the flowers from here are in great demand. The expertise, and workmanship, is quite evident, and flowers from here are not just sent out to other states, but are also exported. The garlands are creatively strung together by flower experts who have been in the business for decades. When you look at the combinations being churned out, you know that this is no easy task. Incidentally, most of the garlands are put together by men and the women who sell loose flowers. Several kinds of garlands are made here for weddings and deities alike, and many are studded with stones and entwined with zari threads for the glitz factor. The garland makers can create the combination of colours as per your request. The place is also a favourite with celebrities who often place orders for flowers from here. Interestingly, the twine used to string flowers is made from banana fibres. Likewise, the vegetable market located in the vicinity has several fresh vegetables, and the vendors are not shy to pose for pictures either. Most of them are quite friendly, and can get quite chatty, especially if you can speak Tamil, the local language.Refrain from posting comments that are obscene, defamatory or inflammatory, and do not indulge in personal attacks, name calling or inciting hatred against any community.
