India’s worst tourist traps: 6 activities you might want skip
India is a land of incredible diversity and rich cultural heritage, offering countless breathtaking destinations. However, not all tourist spots live up to the hype. Some places, known as tourist traps, tend to be overrated and overpriced, offering a less than authentic experience. Here are some of the tourist traps in India and why you might want to steer clear of them.
Agra’s Taj Mahal souvenir shops
The Taj Mahal is undoubtedly a must-visit, but the souvenir shops around it can be a major tourist trap. These shops often sell overpriced items, claiming them to be authentic or made from precious materials like marble or gemstones. In reality, many of these products are mass-produced and can be bought for a fraction of the price elsewhere. It's best to buy souvenirs from reputable stores or government emporiums.
Shimla’s Mall Road
Shimla’s Mall Road is famous for its colonial charm and shopping experience, but it has increasingly become commercialised and overcrowded. The prices here are inflated, and the quality of goods and food doesn’t always justify the cost. Moreover, the incessant haggling and persistent touts can be a significant turn-off. Exploring the lesser-known parts of Shimla or nearby towns can offer a more peaceful and authentic experience.
Beaches of Goa in peak season
Goa is synonymous with beautiful beaches and vibrant nightlife. However, visiting during peak season (December to February) can be overwhelming. The popular beaches like Baga, Calangute, and Anjuna become overcrowded, and prices for accommodation, food, and activities skyrocket. For a more relaxing experience, consider visiting during the off-season or exploring quieter beaches in South Goa.
Jaipur’s Amber Fort elephant rides
Amber Fort is a magnificent historical site in Jaipur, but the elephant rides offered there are a controversial tourist trap. The elephants are often overworked and poorly treated, raising serious ethical concerns. Instead of contributing to animal cruelty, opt for a jeep ride to the fort or simply walk up, enjoying the stunning views and architecture along the way.
Varanasi’s Ganga Aarti boat rides
Varanasi’s Ganga Aarti is a profound spiritual experience, but the boat rides offered to view the ceremony can be a tourist trap. Boat operators often charge exorbitant rates and the boats can be overcrowded, detracting from the serene atmosphere. It’s better to watch the Aarti from the ghats, where you can truly soak in the ritual’s beauty and spirituality.
Manali’s Solang Valley adventure sports
Solang Valley in Manali is a popular spot for adventure sports like paragliding, zorbing, and skiing. However, the activities here can be overpriced and overcrowded, especially during peak tourist season. Additionally, safety standards are not always up to par. For a more enjoyable adventure experience, consider visiting alternative destinations like Bir Billing for paragliding or Auli for skiing, which offer better value and safety.
