Standing in the middle of Royal Street, amidst some eye-catching structures, is the lovely and massive Hotel Monteleone, the only tall building allowed in the French Quarter. It is the perfect rags to riches story, and was started by an immigrant cobbler from Sicily. The facade is in keeping with the rest of the French Quarter and exudes a certain charm and grace that is difficult to describe but endearing to gaze at. Inside, it is chic like a luxury hotel and yet enjoys the reputation of being haunted. It is said that a particular door, when locked, will swing open on its accord; the lift often stops at the wrong floor even though the button has not been pressed; and people have reported images of ghostly children playing.
