Goa is undisputedly one of India’s most favoured party hubs. In this part of the country, entertainment is in plenty as its beaches, restaurants, bars, and other touristy places are full of options. Around Holi, however, Goa shows another facet of its abstract personality when its cultural aspect comes forth in its glory when the celebrations of Shigmo festival commence.
It is of two kinds – Dhakto Shigmo (small Shigmo), and Vhadlo Shigmo (big Shigmo). While, the former holds significance among the farming community, the rural citizens, and the class of labourers; the Vhadlo Shigmo is an all inclusive festival celebrated by and large by everyone.
Dhakto Shigmo focuses on dancing, singing, and organising street processions. It kicks-off 5 days prior to the full moon days of the Hindu lunar month of Phalguna and concludes on the full moon day in the areas that were ruled by the Portuguese. On the other hand, Vhadlo begins on the full moon days and goes on for the next 5 days primarily in the New Conquest areas. Unlike Dhakto, Vhadlo is committed to holding celebrations exclusively inside places of worship dedicated to Jambavali, Dhargale, Kansarpal, and Phatarpya.
On Day 1 of Shigmotasav, the village deity is given a ritual bath, robed in saffron-hued attire, and offered specially prepared food. Afterwards, a feast is held in which all the villagers are welcomed to dine on the sacrament.
All in all, Holi celebration in Goa revolved around Shigmo, which grants a wonderful opportunity to the tourists to bond with the locals. And when the tickets to flights in Goa are bookable —why further delay? Start planning for Holi 2018 in Goa, pronto!
