Designed by the city’s celebrated colonial architect Henry Hunter, the Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery illustrates some of the essence that is the city. Room after room is wallpapered with prints and paintings of Tasmania. Colonial artefacts and aboriginal displays are thoughtfully displayed. The Maritime Museum of Tasmania is also worth a visit – given that Hobart has long been the starting point for several voyages into the Southern Ocean. The engagement with the sea and Antarctica runs so deep, that a joke in these parts goes that every local probably knows or is related to someone who has visited Antarctica.
