Go whale watching in Husavik

Iceland is one of Europe’s top whale-watching destinations. Hundreds of these marine mammals live in the waters that surround Iceland. Husavik, in northern Iceland, is the whale watching capital of Iceland but a number of companies operate tours from Reykjavik as well. Most excursions last for three to four hours and boat rides can get quite chilly even during summer, so it’s advisable to dress warmly.
Of course spotting whales is dependent on variables such as season, temperature of the water, and luck, but the chances of spotting a few whales are extremely high especially in Husavik. Minke whales and humpback whales are the most frequently spotted creatures in Icelandic waters but white-beaked dolphins, sperm whales, killer whales, porpoises and other marine species make an occasional appearance as well. It’s amazing to observe these creatures and their behavioral patterns in their natural habitat. Whale watching excursions also give visitors the opportunity to drink in Iceland’s spectacular scenery and spot certain species of birds unique to Iceland.
