New Zealand’s biggest sporting event rolls into Wellington each year in February, with thousands of fans embracing the passion and energy of Sevens rugby. The Hertz Sevens is the fourth leg in the HSBC Sevens World Series, and is played at Westpac Stadium in Wellington each year. A major event on the national sporting calendar—particularly for a rugby-loving country such as New Zealand—it comprises of 16 international teams from around the world, in a two-day-long, action packed tournament. Each year 35,000 fans flock to New Zealand for this event, but it’s not all about rugby. The tournament is known just as much for its party atmosphere and fancy dress, as it is for the sport. The city is a swarm of colour, as locals and tourists flock to the streets dressed as superheroes, robbers, pirates and ninjas, before heading to Westpac Stadium to cheer on their team. For those staying on after the games are over, Wellington—nestled between rolling hills and a stunning harbour—has a vibrant and compact downtown area that's best explored on foot. The city is home to Te Papa (the national museum), which tells the story of New Zealand’s history through bold and interactive exhibits. The area referred to as Welly, is the perfect place to party with vibrant bars, art galleries, theatres, attractions and a humming nightlife. Wellington is also known as New Zealand’s events capital, and plays host to several other iconic events.
