Also known as Thao Thep Kasattri Thao Si Sunthon Monument, this is one of the top landmarks of the island city. Located at a traffic roundabout in the heart of the city, the Heroines' Monument is a tribute to the unmatched courage of two sisters, Lady Chan and Mook, who led a successful war against the Burmese invasion in the 18th century. Lady Chan was the wife of the governor of Thalang Town. Her husband died days before the Burmese attacked the city, but instead of escaping to safety, Lady Chan decided to fight back with the help of her sister Mook. They were outnumbered by their enemy but their skillful battler moves saw them to victory. Legend has it that the sisters convinced the women of the city to dress as men so that the cavalry looked heavy. The monument was built in 1967 and it has become a city special over the years.
