Revered by music lovers and the devout alike, this living heritage site houses the tomb of the medieval Sufi saint Nizamuddin Auliya (1236-1325 AD). The complex also contains the tomb of Auliya’s disciple Amir Khusrau, considered to be a great Persian and Urdu poet in his own right. There are several Mughal graves within the precinct as well: emperor Shah Jahan’s daughter Jahanara’s grassy marble cenotaph; the grave of the 18th-century ruler Muhammad Shah Rangila, under whose reign Delhi was sacked by Persian emperor Nadir Shah; and the exquisitely-carved tomb of Atgah Khan, a nobleman whose wife was emperor Akbar’s nurse.
Every Thursday evening, the dargah rings with the sound of Khusrau’s qawwalis, sung by Sufi devotional singers. This is also one of Delhi’s best cultural experiences. The neighbouring basti is dotted with eateries and other monuments, such as famed poet Mirza Ghalib’s mausoleum; Barakhamba, a 16th-century Lodi monument with 12 pillars; and the Chausanth Khamba, a 17th-century white marble hall with 64 pillars and several tombs.
