Winnipeg Police Museum and Historical Society Inc.

The Winnipeg Police Museum and Historical Society Inc. has always attracted visitors of all ages and has always been free for the public. Last year, it closed its doors and moved to its new location at Police Headquarters and is expected to open in the summer of 2016. The new space is bigger, brighter and still free; housing some of the most interesting and largest artefacts in the city’s history. One of the most anticipated artefacts on display will be the hovercraft from 1971 that was intended for water rescue use but wasn’t ever actually used due to failures in the design. Other interesting items to look out for will include the first robot to ever be used in the service, a bomb retrieval truck and old badges and uniforms. Children generally find the old jail cells particularly interesting as well as old handcuffs, weapons and mug shots of past criminals. It is here where visitors will get to see the memorabilia from the Winnipeg general strike of 1919, including an array of weapons and badges. The new museum promises to offer the opportunity to see police artefacts up close and personal.
