Learn about Spanish artists – originally planned as a Natural History Cabinet by King Charles III, the Museo del Prado was officially founded in 1819 to house the royal collection of paintings and sculptures. The collection includes around 8000 paintings, 1000 sculptures, 4000 prints and drawings, and over 1000 coins. Out of this massive collection, around 2000 artefacts are on display in various halls. The museum represents art from 12th to 20th century. The Museo del Prado boasts the largest collection of Spanish art in the world. The Spanish legend Francisco de Goya is the single most extensively represented artist in the museum with some his finest works, including La Maja Desnuda, La Maja Vestida, and Third of May. El Greco and Diego Velázquez are other prominent Spanish artists well represented in the museum. Besides these, works of some other renowned artists such as Peter Paul Rubens, Caravaggio, Raphael, and Titian, grace the walls of the museum.
