You will have to head slightly out of town for this next winter activity but it’s entirely worth it, whether you are a newbie at the sport or an experienced ice climber. The Canadian Rockies are considered by many to be the ice climbing capital of the world and Yamnuska Mountain Adventures are the company to hook up with if you are a beginner. The basic ice course will teach climbers how to use the top rope belay system, understand the use of personal ice climbing equipment and introduce you to climbing techniques. Climbs take place in the areas of Banff, Canmore and Kananaskis, just west of the city. Closest to Calgary is the Bow Valley where ice climbers love to explore Grotto Canyon, Cascade Falls, Rogan’s Gully and Louise Falls. A little further lies the Ghost River Area, which is counted amongst the finest ice climbing destinations in the world as it boasts several routes, incredible wilderness setting, free camping and low risk of avalanche.
