Getting around in Kolkata

From charming yellow taxis to the only tram system in India, Kolkata has a surfeit of transport options within the city. The ubiquitous yellow Ambassador taxis are easily available and surprisingly cheap. Be warned however, that many of these taxis use an outdated metre and the actual fare of the journey will be calculated using conversion charts that every driver carries. Local buses are another way to travel within the city, although these passenger-crammed vehicles can be a little daunting for first time travellers. The one-line Metro, as crowded as any other underground system at rush hour, is also the city’s most stress-free form of public transport. For the true Kolkata experience, hop onto one of the city’s many trams. The Calcutta Tramways, the oldest surviving electric tram network of Asia, is still one of the best ways of travelling between places in the city.
