Writers’ Building

With memories of the Indian independence movement embedded in each brick of the building, the Writers’ Building is the epitome of classic European architecture in India. Often shortened to Writers’, the building is currently the secretarial building of the State Government of West Bengal. Originally, the premises served as the office for the clerical and administrative staff of the British East India Company—employees who were often called Writers. Hence the building acquired its current name—Writers’ Building. The current composition of the building is a cluster of 13 four-storeyed buildings, also known as Mahakaran, standing on 10 acres of land. Today, at least 6000 employees work here.
