Indian Railways set to scrap flexi-fare scheme on 40 trains

Indian Railways is all set to scrap the flexi-fare plan, also called dynamic pricing, for 40 trains. This is, in fact, good news for all rail passengers. This move comes as another attempt to make train journeys accessible for common man, as the flexi fare drove people away by making the fares of railways costlier than the airline tickets.
This is not the end of good news. As for the remaining 102 trains that are under the flexi-fare scheme, the Indian Railways is going to offer 50% discount for those opting for ‘last minute’ bookings, which are typically seats available up to four days before the journey. Further, a graded discount system will also be put into place for trains that witness less than 60% of bookings.

As per the latest news reports, this flexi-fare scheme has been scrapped for trains that have shown 50% of utilisation. This scheme has been tweaked for the purpose of providing competitive fares and convenience to travellers, and also help raise the revenue for Indian Railways.
The very idea behind this plan was to find a win-win situation for both passengers and railways. The railways is trying to respond positively to the grievances of passengers, and win them back by making rain journey affordable as well as comfortable when compared to other modes of travel. It is also expected that scrapping this system will also help railways to raise revenue through higher utilisation of seats.
