Independence Day: Exploring the places that signify India’s struggle for freedom

This year India will be celebrating it's 74th year of independence as a free country. With only a few hours remaining until the day break of August 15, it is time to know what shaped our freedom and places that played an important role. Here we bring the top places related to Independence Day.

Chandrashekhar Azad Park, Allahabad
One of the most famous encounters between an Indian revolutionary Chandra Shekhar Azad and the British officials took place at this park. While trying to make a safe escape after a gun-fight, Azad was caught by the police. However, instead of being killed by the British men, Azad decided to shoot himself dead by his own gun. After Independence, the park was named after the revolutionary and his life-sized statue was erected inside the park.

Jhansi Fort, Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh

Rani Laxmi Bai of Jhansi forever remains the most daring queen of modern India who fought tooth and nail with the British. The fort has temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and his son Ganesha as well as a museum. At the Jhansi Fort, visitors can look forward to watch the sound and light show based on the life of the fighter queen and the First War of Independence held in 1857.
Cellular Jail, Port Blair, Andaman Island

In order to break the spirit of Indian freedom fighters, the British men would send the ‘offenders’ to the Cellular Jail in Andaman. The journey to the Kaala Pani, as it was popularly known, was very arduous. At the jail, prisoners were subjected to isolation and mental torture. Several noteworthy freedom activists became victims of the grave torture of the Cellular Jail.

The Wagah Border divides the two countries India and Pakistan by a road. The daily beat the retreat ceremony held before sundown evokes a feeling of awe. For patriots, it is a sight to behold.
