Originally a private botanical garden, Dusit Zoo (locally referred to as Khao Din) was transformed into its current avatar in 1938. Currently acknowledged as one of the premier zoological facilities in the country, it houses facilities like an animal park and hospital, zoo museum, an educational centre, a canteen and even a lake you can peddle on in a boat. Home to about 1600 animal species from around the world, the zoo sprawls over an area of about 188800 sq m and was the first of its kind in Thailand. There’s even an area which has rides for kids, and a World War II underground shelter for those who want to take in a quick history lesson.
