This is the 17th century house that was once owned by Beatrix Potter, the children's author and illustrator best known for the series of her small format Peter Rabbit books. A typical example of Lakeland vernacular architecture with stone walls and a slate roof, the house is now maintained by the National Trust and is open to the public as the writer's house museum. Potter wrote many of her famous children’s books in this quaint house which makes it a site of high literary significance. Some of the most loved characters such as Tom Kitten, Samuel Whiskers and Jemima Puddleduck were all created here and the books have many pictures of the house and the garden. Incidentally the garden is very well maintained and reminiscent of the good old days with flowers like peonies, lavender, honey suckle and fruits like strawberries, raspberries and currants. July 2016 marks the 150th birth anniversary of the great author and there is a lot to look forward to as part of the ‘Thanks Beatrix’ program that is being planned at Hill Top.
