I remember very well how a theatre lover friend of mine spotted the Den Nationale Scene while walking in the streets of Bergen. She went crazy on seeing the architecture of the building and the hanging posters of the various plays that were scheduled over there. Den Nationale Scene, founded in 1850, is one of the oldest theatres in Norway. It’s also the biggest theatre in Bergen, located very close to the Town Square. It moved to the current building in 1909, which had to be restored after Second World War. The theatre magnificently stands on a small hill with a beautiful copper dome on the top of the building and a symmetrical façade with various sculptures and a few artistic details. In the park of the theater, a statue of Henrik Ibsen has been constructed, who was one of the first writers-in-residences and art-directors of the theater. The tickets aren’t very expensive as per Norwegian standards, but they are quite difficult to book. Hence, don’t wait to reach Norway and book, else you will miss one of the best cultural experiences of this Scandinavian country.
