Except in the very latest travel guide, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya would be listed as the ‘Prince of Wales Museum’ – a name still embedded in popular parlance. Founded in 1904, its collection is housed in an Indo-Saracenic heritage structure integral to the landscape of Colaba in South Mumbai. Many of the art, archaeological finds and antiquities have been generously donated by prominent Mumbai families, and the miniatures and bronzes are especially notable. As a hub of culture, it also organises debates and seminars on social and political issues of the day.
