So you’ve heard of fish spas — but not really sure if they’re for you? Join the club! Originally from Turkey, fish spas continue to grow in popularity throughout Asia. It’s basically where you submerge your feet into a tank of water filled with “Garra Rufa” — a species of fish known for eating off dead skin. The idea is that when the spa is over, the customer walks away with soft and smooth feet. A session can take anywhere between 20 and 60 minutes. They are offered seemingly everywhere in Bangkok, both street-side and in major shopping centres. We suggest going to MBK for yours, since the gigantic mall provides a wealth of entertainment to complement your treatment. Siam Fish Spa also comes recommended. As for whether or not fish spas are safe, the verdict is technically still out. The main problem occurs when spas don’t change the tank water often enough, which can lead to infection. Still, I’ve never known anyone personally who’s had a bad experience. If you want to try something out-of-ordinary, Bangkok’s a great place to dip your feet into different waters.
