Austria was once the seat of the powerful Habsburg monarchy that ruled large parts of central Europe from the 16th century to the 20th century. The royal family’s realm covered Austria, Hungary, Slovenia, the Czech Republic to name a few. They left behind stunning palaces many of which are open to the public. The Imperial Palace or Hofburg in Vienna was the winter residence of the royal family, and parts of it serve as the residence and office of the President of Austria today. The palace houses are opulent imperial residences that will give you a taste of their royal life. The most notable of the collections is the Sisi Museum, dedicated to Empress Elisabeth (who was fondly known as Sisi), the wife of Emperor Franz Joseph I. The exhibits include her bedchamber, dressing area, christening clothes, ceremonial gowns, even her milk tooth! Another palace worth visiting is the summer imperial residence, Schönbrunn Palace, a short metro ride from Vienna. The massive Baroque palace is a World Cultural Heritage site and showcases the history of the Habsburgs through a multimedia exhibition. The landscaped gardens and the orangery are perfect for a summer stroll. The grounds host a popular Christmas Market, with a giant Christmas tree against the lit up backdrop of the palace; it’s a pretty sight indeed!
