Located in the Baywater area, BJ’s is true blue neighbourhood dive bar that is quite far away from the French Quarter, and all the hoopla that surrounds it. This is the ideal place to experience what a local jazz bar is all about, as the patrons seem to know each other and also the musicians. Of course visitors are welcome, and you talk for hours on music. The interiors are nothing much with the obligatory bunch of photographs with visiting celebrities. The drinks are relatively inexpensive too. But the line up of musicians is fantastic, especially since the likes of Little Freddie King have chosen to play here regularly. Also popular are Monday nights when the Special Men band does a series of rather raucous covers of old time R&B numbers after 10 pm, and usually brings the house down.
