Hit the sand in style
Talk of the town: In the summer of 1951, Hawaiian boardrider Duke Kahanamoku visited Sydney's Freshwater Beach, where he became the first person to surf Australia's world-class waves.
Beach safety: No matter how harmless the ocean looks, always swim between the safety flags at patrolled beaches. Calm waters may conceal a deadly undertow.
Beach to bar: While (almost) anything goes on the sand, you won't be served at a nearby pub without a shirt on. Flip-flops and shorts are usually OK, but you're likely to need closed-in shoes and slacks to get past the doorman after dark. CBD dress codes are more formal.
Sun protection: Sunburn can occur in as little as 15 minutes on a hot day in Australia. Lather up every two hours with broad spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen.
Family friendly: Most Sydney beaches are alcohol and smoke-free zones, with police performing regular patrols.
