A vast and accessible collection of Australian and international art
Occupying four floors of constantly-evolving exhibition space, the Art Gallery of NSW manages to make its vast collection of classic and contemporary art accessible to all. National heroes such as Sidney Nolan and Rupert Bunny hold their own beside British Pre-Raphaelites Lord Leighton and Sir Edward John Poynter, whilst the traditionalists will delight in the Rubens and Canalettos peeking out from behind the Rodin sculptures.
Modernists will appreciate the dozens of Picassos, Braques and Cezannes on show, although the crowning glory is arguably the Brett Whiteley collection. So keen was the Gallery to preserve the legacy of this late, great Australian Surrealist, it purchased his studio in Surry Hills, which is now a museum in its own right.
