Word to the wise: Wiertz's frequent choice of lurid subjects mean his paintings certainly aren't for everyone.
Little known today, 19th century Belgian painter Antoine Wiertz was a superstar during his lifetime, famous for his melodramatic, often grisly canvasses. Some people find these hideous - they sometimes depict such subjects as premature burial and cannibalism - while others see them as a fascinating precursor to 20th century surrealism.
