Portugal has opened the world’s longest suspension bridge above the fast flowing Rio Paiva (rio meaning river) in Arouca Unesco Global Geopark. Located close to Porto, this bridge is called the 516 Arouca Bridge. The bridge hangs 175 m above the river, and is 516 m long, making it the longest in the world. The bridge has an open metal grid floor where visitors can walk on, and feel adventurous.
The steel cables are held on the two ends by V-shaped concrete towers, making it a modern engineering marvel. Interestingly, the design has incorporated the Tibetian style of footbridges, while its floor and side railings are made of metal grids. It will take you close to 10 minutes to walk across the bridge, and it is definitely a very scenic walk. You can see the Aguieiras Waterfall, of course the Rio Paiva river below and archaeological sites such as the Neolithic graves, and the Roman ruins. Here, visitors can also take part in water sports.
