For long the trading heart of the city, Long Market was also a corn exchange, tournament venue and site for public execution. In front of it is Gdansk’s most famous landmark—Neptune Fountain. Symbolising the town’s close association with the sea, the monument was erected in the mid 17th century on directions of the then mayor of the town. The fountain and the fence around it with the emblem of Gdansk and Polish eagles are one of the foremost tourist attractions. According to legend, the fountain was instrumental in the development of Gdansk’s famous Goldwasser, a strong herbal liqueur with flecks of gold.
