Muthanga forest is the part of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, with its entry point near Sultan Bathery. It borders Bandipur Reserve in Karnataka and the area is known for regular elephant sightings, which draws crowds for regular jeep safaris conducted by forest department. Jeep safaris are conducted twice daily, once at 7 am and then at 4 pm. Elephant sightings are the most common in the sanctuary, followed by deer―spotted deer as well as barking deer. Read less

Jeep Safaris are held twice a day at Muthanga and Tholpetty forest reserves. No prior booking is done for these safaris and tickets are issued at the counter an hour in advance. Be prepared for long queues during holidays and vacations. Staying overnight inside the sanctuary is possible, and is sure to be a good experience. However, bookings are to be done only through the forest wardens. Contact numbers are given on the above websites.
