While there are several temples in Yogyakarta, two of the most prominent ones are UNESCO World Heritage Sites—Borobudur, one of the largest Buddhist temples in the world and Candi Prambanan, a temple dedicated to the Hindu deities. The temple with over 500 Buddha statues was built in the 9th century. The Prambanan group of temples, also built around the same time, had over 240 shrines but most of them are in ruins at present. Furthermore, it’s a surreal experience to be in Borobudur at 4 am, watching the sunrays light up the entire town. We walked in the dark, climbed up the steps and waited with bated breath for the sun to rise. Soon, the sunrays engulfed the entire city, including the tall towers of the shrines scaling over 150 feet.
