This famous fair is held during the Hindu lunar month of ‘Kartika’ (generally in October or November) every year. Spread over a week, the fair attracts traders from across the state, who converge here with their cows, camels, sheep and goats. Besides the actual trading, there are plenty of parallel entertaining diversions. These include folk music and dance performances, magic shows, snake charmers, and turban-tying and moustache contests. ‘Kartik Purnima’, the full moon night during this month, is considered to be especially auspicious, and attracts hordes of Hindu pilgrims who visit the city to bathe in the holy lake. Together, the two events transform Pushkar into a visual spectacle.
