Kite-flying on Independence Day in a tradition in north India, especially in Delhi, Lucknow, Bareilly and Moradabad. Besides signifying the spirit of freedom, there is a whole lot of historical significance to it. Back in 1927, India was protesting against the Simon Commission and, at that time, freedom fighters coined famous slogans like Go Back Simon.

The protest became so popular across the country that people started writing slogans on the kites and flew those in the sky. Since then, kite flying became an important part of India’s freedom history and a tradition that is still carried out.

Every year, patang baazi or kite-flying competitions are held locally in parts of north India, including old Delhi and Lucknow. The fun competitions are an interesting part of the Independence Day celebrations that people look forward to. In old Delhi, shopkeepers have come up with kites with messages such as Wash your hands and Please maintain a six-feet distance.
