Hyderabad’s illustrious history in the last 400 years often obscures the fact that it is located in a region with a much longer past. The Deccan plateau, on which the city was founded, dates back to 2,500 million years. A local initiative called the Society to Save Rocks organises nature treks to rocky areas around Hyderabad on weekends, with the aim of creating awareness about the protection of the granite hills and ridges of the Deccan plateau. Nature enthusiasts can also watch out for its annual Hyderabad Rockathon, with activities such as rappelling, bouldering, rock photography and rock balancing.
